KEARNS — Two teen boys have been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in Kearns on Tuesday.

Fernando Amaya-Higareda, 23, of Kearns, was driving south on Impressions Drive about 8:20 p.m. when he stopped near 5600 South, according to Unified Police Sgt. Melody Cutler. Amaya-Higareda then turned the vehicle around and stopped near where the two boys, ages 16 and 17, were walking and they approached the vehicle.

Then there was some sort of an altercation between Amaya-Higareda and the two boys, who fired several rounds, according to Cutler.

Amaya-Higareda’s vehicle then rolled downhill about 200 yards into a nearby park. The back window of his vehicle was shot out.

The teen suspects ran away but were taken into custody a short time later. Police also recovered at least one gun they believe was used in the shooting, Cutler said.

Investigators believe the three people were acquainted in some way and the shooting was not a random act.
