72-year-old bicyclist dies after being struck by pickup truck in Summit County

COALVILLE, Summit County — A bicyclist was killed when she was hit by a truck with a trailer turning into a driveway, officials said.

A 72-year-old woman and her husband were riding bicycles on West Hoytsville Road in Summit County Friday morning when a pickup truck that was pulling a double axel trailer turned into a driveway, according to a Saturday statement from Summit County Sheriff’s Lt. Andrew Wright. The 67-year-old man who was driving the truck told police he looked for oncoming traffic before making a left turn onto a driveway on West Hoytsville Road. The woman and her husband were traveling in the opposite direction of the truck when the woman was hit, the statement said.

The woman died from her injuries at the scene of the accident.

The woman’s husband, who was traveling several feet behind her, crashed his bicycle after swerving out of the way to avoid being hit by the truck, according to Wright. Both cyclists were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.

The driver estimated he was traveling at a low speed when he hit the woman, according to Wright, and the woman’s husband estimated they were traveling on their bicycles between 20 and 30 mph.

“As the weather continues to get warmer, we remind motorists to pay extra attention and watch for cyclists and motorcycles,” the statement said.

The driver was issued a citation for failing to yield.

The woman is not being identified at this time until other family and friends have been notified.
