Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office say an Arizona couple died at Deer Creek Reservoir Sunday afternoon. (Jeffrey D. Allred, Deseret News)

CHARLESTON, Wasatch County — A couple from Arizona died Sunday afternoon at Deer Creek Reservoir, police said.

Preliminary information suggests the couple from Chandler, Arizona, drowned, but the official cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office, Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

The 72-year-old man entered the water to swim Sunday morning, and when he started to struggle in the water, his 58-year-old wife joined him and tried to assist him. Neither was wearing a life jacket.

Police say the couple went under water and did not surface for an extended period of time. Bystanders brought the couple to shore before police could arrive.
