Dee Smith, Weber County attorney and former Utah AG candidate, has died

OGDEN — Former Weber County attorney and Utah attorney general candidate Dee Smith has passed away, his family confirmed.

Smith ran as a Democrat against John Swallow for the seat of Utah attorney general in 2012, and continued to serve as the Weber County attorney after his loss. Smith did not seek reelection in 2014; he had worked there since 2009.

Smith began serving as an Ogden justice court judge in January of 2015 before returning to the Weber County Attorney’s Office as a prosecutor in November 2016, the Standard-Examiner reported.

Smith’s sister Shelly said in a tweet on Friday night, “No one ever prepares you for this sort of loss! My heart is full of sadness! Thanks, @OGDEN_POLICE, @WeberCoSheriff, @UTHighwayPatrol, for being there for our family last night and honoring my brother, Dee Smith.”

The tweet included video of police from the aforementioned departments in procession with their lights flashing in front of a hospital.
