Mother who sparked Amber Alert now faces criminal charge

WEST VALLEY CITY — A woman who sparked an Amber Alert on Halloween was charged Monday with taking her 3-month-old daughter that she no longer had custody of.

Leticia Vigil, 29, whose home address is listed in court records as unknown, was charged Monday in 3rd District Court with child kidnapping, a first-degree felony.

Vigil lost custody of her daughter, Viana Vigil, on Oct. 27 due to abuse and neglect, according to charging documents. The girl was placed into state custody and Vigil’s cousin was to watch the infant until a more permanent arrangement could be made, the charges state.

On Oct. 31, while the cousin was at work and Viana was with a babysitter, Vigil took her daughter claiming she had been given permission, according to the charges.

West Valley police issued an Amber Alert after it was discovered Viana was gone. Vigil later returned the child.
