Ogden police identify man suspected of sexual assault who was killed by officers

OGDEN — Police have identified a sexual assault suspect who was shot and killed by officers this month in Ogden.

On Feb. 6, Dino Raul Morales, 28, was shot by two Ogden officers after refusing to drop a gun that he was holding, according to police.

Officers had been looking for Morales, who they say sexually assaulted a woman earlier that evening and then took her car.

About 11:40 p.m., police spotted the stolen vehicle near 30th Street and Washington Boulevard. As officers approached the vehicle, Morales ran.

Police followed footprints in the snow to an open garage/shed in the 2900 block of Grant Avenue. The footprints came to an end near a pickup truck that was parked under the shed.

As police were closing in, “the suspect stood up in the bed of the pickup truck armed with a handgun. The suspect refused to comply with commands from the officers. Two Ogden police officers fired their guns. The suspect was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene,” Ogden Police Chief Eric Young said.

Morales, who had a California ID, had not been in northern Utah very long.

Two officers who shot Morales were placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation from the Weber County Attorney’s Office and an internal investigation. Both were wearing body cameras that were on when the shooting occurred, according to Young.
