PAYSON — Search and rescue teams are attempting to locate a missing 19-year-old man who went under the surface at Spring Lake after struggling to swim Friday evening, according to Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

The lake is located just south of Payson in unincorporated Utah County.

The man was swimming at the lake with his friends about 6:45 p.m. when he and a woman he was with began to struggle, according to Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon. A bystander rescued the woman and then attempted to help the man to the shore when he went under the surface, Cannon said.

Payson Fire Department and Utah County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue are on scene. Due to murky waters, scuba divers, sonar equipment and ground crews are all being used to attempt to locate the missing man. Crews’ efforts are expected to continue through the night.

The man’s identity was not released.
