Teen in critical condition after Friday night shooting

SANDY — A 16-year-old male is in “critical but stable” condition Saturday after he was shot in Sandy late Friday night.

Sandy Police Sgt. Clayton Swensen said the shooting happened about 11 p.m. near 450 East and 7800 South.

Swensen said the teen “left his residence to meet up with someone,” but police don’t know who exactly. “At some point, there was an exchange with the people he met with and at least one shot was fired.” Witnesses called police, who responded to the scene and had the teen transported to the hospital.

“Right now, it’s an active investigation in the preliminary stages,” Swensen said. “Still trying to figure out who is involved.” Police are talking to witnesses and looking for surveillance footage, he said.

Police could not specify Saturday where on his body the teen was injured.
